Cyril Couten, CFO
Cyril spent 20 years in the computer/software industry (HP, McDonnell Douglas
Information
Systems, IBM Europe) where he held various jobs in the finance function (eg CFO of IBM
Europe SW Group, Director of Operations for Lotus Europe). Since 2000, he has occupied
part
time CFO positions in several companies.
Cyril joined the BeThe1 team at its creation, in 2001. His other activities include
consulting and investment in start-ups and small companies.
Since our start in 2002, BeThe1 has been committed to donating 0.5% of its net sales to
supporting NGOs dedicated to training differently abled people. We have chosen the Central
Institute on Mental Retardation (CIMR) in Trivandrum, based in Thiruvananthapuram, capital
of Kerala State in southern India, and which is contributing to change the negative image of
people with Down Syndrome in India, where at least 1,5 million people affected today. CIMR educates
and trains children with Down's Syndrome and their parents. Parents learn how to take better
care of their differently abled child in the absence of adequate local services. Education of people
with Down syndrome at CIMR is based on learning manuals skills and arts (dance, music,
drawing, etc.) which enables them to express their emotions, an area where they often demonstrate
extraordinary talents. Their spectacular acting abilities in particular allow them to take
on a full fledged role in modern Indian society.
During the course of our exchanges and annual visits, CIMR and BeThe1 had a dream of
building a theatre where mentally retarded people would develop, perform and earn a living (at least
partly) from their remarkable artistic talents. Luckily, BeThe1 managed to find the
necessary funding in Europe which enabled CIMR to realise our dream. The theatre opened in May 2007 in
Kovalam (the great sea resort of Kerala, near Trivandrum) and we have continued to support
it ever since.
